In recent years, the layered silicate/rubber nanocomposite material has been a hot field.Phyllosilicates has poor interface compatibility with rubber, so that organically modifiedinorganic clays become a research focus. How to achieve a monolithic layer of clay dispersionand prepare high performance nanocomposites, that is the research’s difficulty lies, and it hasa very important practical significance. This paper studied that clay/rubber nanocomposite was prepared by melt blending, compound organoclay prepared by cationic modifier and anionic modifier, such that thecrystal interlayer spacing of the layered silicate were further increase, even exfoliated. Andthen, rubber polymer chain was inserted between the clay sheets using a strong shear forcewith open mill, formed the clay/rubber nanocomposites. This paper studied the effects ofdifferent modifier type, dosage and ratios of compound modifier on the mechanical propertiesof nanocomposite, and analysis the microstructure characterization of clay by XRD, TEM andso on.Results showed that:(1) Compared with the single cation surfactant modified clay, adoptthe method of this subject is easier to obtain high performance nanocomposites. The methodused in this study is not only applicable to polar rubbers such as nitrile rubber, but alsonon-polar rubbers such as styrene-butadiene rubber.(2) When using the same anionicsurfactant, different carbon chain length of the alkyl quaternary ammonium compound withanionic surfactant lead to different modification effects, is not increased with the increase ofcarbon chain length. Organoclay/nitrile rubber nanocomposites and organoclay/styrenebutadiene rubber nanocomposites which prepared by moderate carbon chain of cetyl trimethylammonium bromide and anionic surfactant has the best mechanical properties.(3) The optimum properties of Organoclay/nitrile rubber nanocomposites which prepared bycation-anion compound surfactant were confirmed: the cationic surfactant used of CTAB, andthe anionic surfactant used of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate, wherein the quality ratio ofinorganic clay and CTAB is2.5:1, the mass ratio of CTAB and SDBS is4:3, and tensilestrength and tear strength increased by188.8%and90.1%conmpared with those ofinorganic clay/NBR nanocomposite.(4) When the mass radio of inorganic clay to CTAB was3:1, the mass radio of CTAB to SDS was4:1, the properties of SBRCNs reached maximum.the tensile strength and tear strength increased by218.4%and218.4%respectively comparedwith inorganic clay/SBR nanocomposite.
