As an important material surface treatment technology, thermal spraying technology notonly could be improved the mechanical properties of materials or components, but also the thefunctional surface with the performances of light, electricity, heat, sound, magnetic and so oncan be prepared. Thermal spray technology is widely used on the surface of ceramic and plastic,as well as traditional metal and alloy. Thermal spraying technology also has the advantages ofprominent economic benefits, flexible processing. At present, the technology of thermal sprayinghas gradually become an important field of material research.In this paper, the surface engineering technology was a starting point. It focused on theprinciple, development and applications of thermal spraying technology. And different types ofthermal spray methods were discussed in detail. The discussion of the thermal spraying methodsincluded flame spraying(supersonic flame spraying), arc spraying, plasma spraying and coldspraying. For each spraying method, it started from the basic principle, then discussed thenecessary materials, equipment, process parameters, and the application of each kind of thermalspraying methods.This paper made the summary of the thermal spraying technology. And themain problems currently existed were pointed out, the development direction and trend ofthermal spraying technology were prospected. We summed up the following conclusions:(1) Spraying materials: The selection of flame spraying, HVOF and plasma spraying materialsare relatively wide. And selection of arc spraying and cold spraying materials are relativelynarrow.(2) The bonding strength: The bonding strength of the supersonic flame spray coating, the coldspray coating and atmosphere plasma spray coating is high. And the bonding strength of arcspray coating is low. The bonding strength of flame spray coating is the lowest.(3) The porosity of the coatings: The porosity of the supersonic flame spray coating, the coldspray coating and atmosphere plasma spray coating is low. The porosity of arc spray coating andflame spray coating is high.(4) The basic theory research: Thermal spraying technology is an interdisciplinary subjectand basic technology that with strong usability. However, due to the influence of high speed,high temperature, non uniformity and other factors, studying on the basic theory of thermalspraying technology will faces great difficulties even though it is very important.(5) The development of new spraying materials: The development direction of thermal spraying is: the composite and low impurity of the coating composition, the ultrafine structureand nanostructure.(6) The development of thermal spraying processes and equipment: The developmentof thermal spraying processes and equipment have been toward to the direction ofhigh-speed and high-energy. Improving the ability of the equipment makes the spray particlesfully melted and bonded, it is beneficial to form high quality coatings.(7) Continue developing new application areas: Thermal spraying technology is ainterdisciplinary subject. Taking the advantage of this feature, combined with the thermalspray technology and other related technology is an effective way to explore new thermalspraying technology methods, to develop new application field of thermal spraying technology.
