Compared with the traditional asphalt damping material, water-based dampingmaterial has many advantages: they can be used as the alternative on automobile roof,side wall, door, floor, wheel cover and so on, they are safe and convenient forconstruction, environmental friendly and high strength. Besides, water-based dampingmaterial has low density, which can meet the requirement of automobile lightweight.At present, some major foreign auto-makers have chosen water-based dampingcoating as automobile coating instead of asphalt board. However, China starts late inthe field of water-based damping material research. Compared with developedcountries, there is still some way to go.Acrylic emulsion, with water as solvent, is non-toxic, tasteless and environmentalfriendly. The water-based damping coating based on acrylic emulsion has severaladvantages such as adjustment of hardness, strong adhesion, corrosion resistance andVOC free. It can meet the requirement of environment protection of automobileindustry and can be used for automotive waterborne damping coating research.In chapter one of this paper, the damping mechanism of polymer damping materials,types of common polymer damping materials, and the influence factors of polymerdamping materials were expounded. Then the application of polymer dampingmaterials in the field of automobile, especially the application of acrylic resin coatingin the field of car were introduced. Finally we introduced the emulsion binder ofwater-based damping coating, especially the property, application and researchprogress of the acrylic emulsion styrene acrylic emulsion and vinyl acetate-acrylicemulsion.In chapter two, aqueous styrene-acrylic emulsion with a series of different glasstransition temperature were successfully synthesized by seed emulsion polymerizationmethod, and emulsion formula and polymerization conditions were determinedthrough single factor analysis. The emulsifier dosage and its ratio, initiator dosage, buffering agent dosage, crosslinking agent dosage, monomer and reaction conditionwere determined through the research on properties such as convert ratio of monomer,coagulum content, stability of reaction, film properties, etc. The emulsion and theirlatex films were analyzed by FT-IR, TEM, DLS, DCS and DMA test. Three kinds offormula were selected by damping value and the glass transition temperature test, andthey will be used as emulsion binder for the preparation of water-based dampingcoating in chapter four.In chapter three, aqueous vinyl acetate-acrylic emulsion with a series of different glasstransition temperature were successfully synthesized by seed emulsion polymerizationmethod, and emulsion formula and polymerization conditions were determinedthrough single factor analysis. The emulsifier dosage and its ratio, initiator dosage,buffering agent dosage, crosslinking agent dosage, monomer, protective colloiddosage and reaction condition were determined through the research on propertiessuch as convert ratio of monomer, coagulum content, stability of reaction, filmproperties, etc. The emulsion and their latex films were analyzed by FT-IR, TEM,DLS, DCS and DMA test. Three kinds of formula were selected by damping valueand the glass transition temperature test, and they will be used as emulsion binder forthe preparation of water-based damping coating in chapter four.In chapter four, according to project requirement, we prepared sprayable water-baseddamping coating using styrene-acrylic emulsion and vinyl acetate-acrylic emulsionprepared in the previous chapters, appropriate fillers and auxiliaries with the emulsionblending method. Preparation technology conditions, emulsion binder dosage, fillersdosage and auxiliaries dosage were determined through the research on properties ofproducts. At last, we selected the optimal formula as the final formula, and studiedtheir application properties according to the standards specified by Great WallCorporation. Test results showed that our water-based vehicle damping coating haveexcellent damping performance in a wide temperature range, which have reached thestandards.
