Feather is a kind of low-carbon, environmentally friendly, recyclable raw material. It was used for automobile filter paper which not only conforms to the basic requirements of the filter paper, effects of feather fiber on the performance of the filter paper were studied and its application value was evaluated in the paper. As can be seen from the effects of wood fiber on filter paper properties, the beating degree of both hardwood and softwood pulp had great influence on performance of filter paper. Air permeability decreased, and apparent density and strength such as bursting, tensile, tear and folding endurance increased with the beating degree increasing. Generally speaking, softwood fibers may be used to improve the strength of filter paper while the hardwood fibers may be used to improve air permeability and formation.Feather fiber is different from fiber of traditional plant raw materials, which was showed by the optical microscope pictures. The feather fibers are rigid, stiff and straight. Their length and width are smaller than them of LBKP. The length and width were all reduced after refined by High Consistency Disc Refiner. What mainly happened to feather fiber was cut effect, i.e. length reduction, rather than fibrous fibrillation and swelling. When the feather fiber was added into stock for preparation automobile filter paper, with the increase in addition of feather fiber, the thickness and air permeability of filter paper increased. The air permeability increased by approximately30%when the added amount of feather fiber was80%mixing15°SR feather fiber with25°SR softwood pulp. However, the strength of the filter paper reduced with the increase of the added amount of feather fibers. The air permeability of the paper sheet rose with the increasing of the feather fiber beating degree, but the strength of the sheet was lower because of the fibers becoming shorter. With the increase of the added amount of PAE and CMC, the thickness and air permeability of the filter paper remain nearly unchanged, but the strength increased. PAE played more significant role than the CMC. PAE addition amount should be about0.5%and CMC about0.2%.The use of feather fiber in filter papers must rely primarily on mercerized fiber in favor of air permeability of filter papers. The air permeability of the filter paper greatly increased with mercerized fiber in place of softwood pulp. Only after beating degree of softwood fiber was higher than13.5°SR could feather fiber play a role in increasing the air permeability. Addition of feather fiber had negative effect on strength of filter paper no matter what beating degree of softwood was. In addition, adding feather fibers could reduce the bubble point pore size of the filter paper. The apparent density of the filter paper had a very significant correlation with other properties. Resin impregnating reduced the air permeability, but was able to significantly improve the strength. Therefore balance of contradiction between air permeability and strength properties was the key to control the qualities of automobile filter paper of different requirements.
