As an active metal, poor corrosion resistance of magnesium has been limited in transportation, storage and application. At present, the effort to protect the magnesium mainly focused on block magnesium. A few literature was reported about electrodeposited aluminum to protect magnesium powder. In the present, the constant voltage electrodeposition of aluminum on the surface of magnesium powder were investigated in ionic liquid. Influence of temperature, time, voltage and ionic liquid composition on unprocessed and processed magnesium powder were studied. The samples were characterized by SEM, EDS, XRD and etc. The results showed that The reasonable composition of ionic liquid was n(AlCl3):n([Emim]Cl)=2:1; Under constant2.2V potential, the coating is better with temperature increases; and under constant2.6V voltage, the coating is dense at45℃and65℃and the coating is thicker at65℃than that at45℃. Under constant3.0V voltage, at low temperature, aluminum is compact and combine well with the matrix, but the surface is not smooth; At3.6V high voltage, temperature was not an important factor on the coating; The effect of the coating under constant3.0V voltage was better than that under constant3.4V voltage for30min; In the case of60min for the coating morphology was better than that under3.0V voltage; Under2.2V voltage, with time prolongation, the effect of aluminum coating on the surface of magnesium powder was better; Under2.6V voltage, with time prolongation, the effect of aluminum coating on the surface of magnesium powder was worse; The injunction between the magnesium substrate and aluminum coating is penetrated each other, and the coating thickness was about13μm.
