Penicillin had been widely used in the world due to its high efficiency, low toxicityand low cost. Many organic solvents were used in the process of penicillin production. And a certain amount of solvent volatilized during solvents transport, storage, use andrecycling processes. Especially, the dry and purification units will produce volatile organiccompounds (VOCs) and odor contaminants. However, there are no air pollutants emissionstandards for pharmaceutical industry in China at present, and integrated dischargestandard can’t reflect the pollution characteristics of penicillin pharmaceutical companies. So the formulation of emission standard of volatile organic compounds from the processof producing penicillin was studied in the manuscript. The penicillin production processes, air pollution control technologies, contaminantsources and pollution characteristics were studied and VOCs and malodorous gasesemission concentrations were measured. Followed on the experience of domestic andforeign environmental standards, the paper sets four control indicators: emissionconcentrations, emission rates, non-organizing emission concentrations and lowestremoval efficiency of organic waste gases. By studying the three aspects of technicalconditions of penicillin production (the production process, raw materials, productquantity, et al.), ecological impact of pollutants (toxicity, harm to human health, influenceto the environment) and treatment status (processing techniques, cost analysis),4pollutantfactors were selected: butyl acetate, n-butanol, total volatile organic compounds and odorconcentration.Pollutants emission concentrations were determined by the experimental data andcomparison with the multi-DMEGAH and foreign and domestic relating emissionstandards; By the formulation of ‘‘procedure for formulation of local airborne pollutantsemission standard”(GB/T13201-91), the pollutants allowable releasing rates of singleemission source were obtained. The standard values are divided into two categories:existing sources and new sources. The exhaust gas treatment technologies and thedomestic and foreign standards were considered during formulating the standards. Finally, the analysis of environment benefit and technological feasibility are also discussed. Thestandard is feasible, after its implementation, the environmental benefits are obvious.
