As the key component of automobile and autobike engine as well as the other internal combustion engines, the crankshaft is in the high demand and has many types. The processing accuracy, flexibility, efficiency and automation level not only have a direct influence on the quality, production efficiency, life, emissions and energy efficiency of the engine, but also perform a decisive role on the engine. With the aim of ensuring high machining accuracy, surface quality, the grinding process is usually used as the final processing operation for the crankshaft at home and abroad now. In order to achieve the high speed, high efficiency, high-precision automated processing of crankshaft, a special CNC crankshaft grinder with process control software must be developed.In this paper,the background of this project, the research of CNC crankshaft grinder status at home and abroad and several core technologies of the tangential point tracing CNC crankshaft grinder was analyzed. Analysis and comparison of the several tangential point tracing grinding motion manner, and select the final processing of the required motion manner. Error analysis on the motion model to calculate the error generated by theory and fitted with the function, eventually will introduce the error to motion model for error compensation. Using the MATLAB software to simulate the process of tangential point tracing grinding movement, the motion characteristics are detected in order to accord with the crankshaft grinder mechanical systems and servo system response range of requirements.The feed mechanism of the CNC crankshaft grinder is designed. The key technologies of the feed mechanism and the structural parameters of the feed system which impact the dynamic performance of the grinder are analyzed. In order to design the horizontal feed mechanism, the hydrostatic bearings and the linear cycle roller bearing guide support are adopted. Comparing the two schemes, the use of linear cycle roller bearing guide support to design the horizontal feeding mechanism is determined to adopt ultimately. Basing this scheme, the horizontal locking element of feeding mechanism is studied. In addition, the vertical feed mechanism is designed. Gaining the three-dimensional solid model of feeding mechanism, the virtual assembly and the motion simulation for the feed mechanism were done. The design and assembly intervention of the mechanism are detected by using the motion simulation.Based on the on-limits sinumerik 840D CNC system, the process control software of the crankshaft grinder is developed by using HMI, VB and VC softwares. The input of the workpiece data and the control of the process are solved fundamentally to make the high efficiency of the crankshaft grinding is possible. In view of the practical requirement of crankshaft grinder processing, the function of the control software was extended to realize the system control more effective and the system function more powerful.
