Western Marxist consumer culture inherits Marx's critical stand and research perspective. Meanwhile, it also absorbs trends of thought in modern western philosophy, studying and introspecting western consumer society. This dissertation aims to do a systematic research on Douglas·Kellner's theory of media culture from the perspective of consumer culture, combined with his unique theory and his social criticism of globalization theory and postmodern theory, analysis and research the differences and association between Marxist theory. As one of the forefront western culture scholars, Kellner open a new door by his broad academic vision, diversified academic perspective, diagnostic research methods for the study of contemporary consumer culture. This thesis analyses the origin of Kellner's cultural critical theory, including how to profit from the Marxism, the Frankfurt school and British Culurtal Studies, proposing to construct the mentality of "the critical cultural research". He emphasize while analysis the popular culture, you must examine and consider the background of the new world. At the point of view of human social development, social development, from agricultural to industrial society and then to the consumer society, that is, from a traditional society to modern society and then to post-modern historical process. Kellner's success in the field of the post-modern research reflects exactly the depth of his exploration of the consumer society.
