The thesis is to study the economic cause of formation of strategic alliance. This issue, which we think deserved to be studied, was discussed simply or omitted by lots of articles (see Chapter 1 Part"study status in both our own country and foreign country"). The reason is that it is the basis of our understanding of inter-organizational relationship (we take strategic alliance as a breakthrough) and it helps us understand better why firms exists moreover. The thesis includes three parts. Part 1 is to review the theories, views and hypotheses. We don't elaborate them generally, but emphasize some of them selectively. We consider that the reason that existing theories is not satisfactory is slurred study object, no differentiating the Inevitability and the fortuitousness of strategic alliance and problem of study method, which causes that scholars hold their own viewpoints and disagree on this issue. In the face of this puzzle, we insist on the basis of theory of firm methodologically. Then we study the economic cause of formation of strategic alliance. Theories of firm we use in the process of logical inference include theory of division of labor, theory of exchange, modern theory of contract and theory of property.Part 2 is to do some research on early strategic alliance and modern strategic alliance so that our theory has continuity on the explanation. We will see that how modern strategic alliances evolve from early strategic alliance and why early strategic alliance can't dominate today with high degree of division of labor. The reason is that modern strategic alliance is superior to early one on the use of knowledge people have acquired and allocation of resources.Part 3 mainly put forward our analysis framework. On the basis of firm theory, we argue that strategic alliance is a kind of contractual arrangements with certain structure. Taking intermediate goods as basic elements of a firm, we argue that the objects both sides of strategic alliance exchange are intermediate goods. Then we discuss deeply connotation, dimensions such as economies of complementarity, economies of specialization, transaction scope and so on, which provides the basis of our arguing the relationship between intermediate goods and contractual arrangements. Our basic conclusion is that strategic alliance is a kind of arrangements used by two...
