There are increasingly uncertainties in manufacturing workshop due to the trend of global market competition. The effective management of the manufacturing process information in workshops, which helps to promptly produce the customer satisfied products with high quality and low cost, has become an important issue when the workshops are facing unforeseeable external changes and internal disturbance. This is especial for the multi-variety and small- batch workshop because the variety of manufacturing processes causes the complexity of the manufacturing process information. The informatization system for manufacturing processes in workshops is one of the effective tools to effectively manage the manufacturing process information, and ensure the information integration between the workshops control layer and the enterprise planning layer.This paper focuses on the information in workshops, especially the manufacturing process information. The informatization system for the multi-variety and small- batch workshop's manufacturing processes, which is based on the knowledge management, has been studied. The architecture of the system is presented, and some key technologies are also discussed. The main contents of this paper are below:Firstly, based on knowledge management, the holistic framework of the informatization system for the workshop's manufacturing processes is studied. The six-view model, which is formed by integrating the knowledge view into the function view, the resource view, the organization view, the information view, and the process view, is used to analyze the workshop's manufacturing system. The architecture of the system based on the component technology is presented, which is composed of the resource layer, the component layer, the function layer, the business process layer, presentation layer,the framework layer integrating manufacturing processes, the management mechanism layer of workshop. The operation mode of the system is discussed considering the operational characteristics of the multi-variety and small-batch workshop.In chapter 3, two key technologies of the workshop's manufacturing process informatization system based on knowledge management are discussed. One is to use OWL, which is one of the semantic Web modeling language as the knowledge representation method, to represent the knowledge of workshop's manufacturing processes according to the description of the connotation of the manufacturing process knowledge, and the analysis of the requirement for the knowledge representation. This is demonstrated by the case of the formalized representation of knowledge in the executive layer of workshop's manufacturing processes. The anther is to construct the business component repository of the informatization system by the component technology, which provides the component to the informatization system of workshop's manufacturing processes.As one part of the project"Research and application of digital manufactory management and executive key technical"which was the National key technologies R&D program(863), the research in this paper has been effectively implemented into the manufacturing workshop of Chongqing Gearbox Limited Corporation. The project has been checked and accepted by the National Ministry Science and Technology in March 2007.
