Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become an issue that companies cannot afford to neglect in the 21st century. Taking social responsibility is not only about meeting the expectation and demand of stakeholders, but is also essential for enterprises to acquire competence and sustainability. This thesis, through the standard theoretical and field research, accounts the development of CSR concept and movement and studies the CSR practices of large multi-national companies. With a large amount of first-hand information, the thesis summarizes the approaches and experiences of CSR management of large multi-national companies, analyzes the key factors that influence CSR practices, and put forward recommendations to Chinese companies for their implementation of CSR management. The thesis aims to help Chinese companies to improve their understanding of CSR as well as to develop effective CSR management by referring to the theoretics and experiences of foreign countries.After more than twenty years of academic research and business practice, there have been significant achievements in CSR theories and successful case studies. Multi-national companies, as the pioneer who benefit the most from globalization, have realized the importance of CSR. They have learnt to using CSR to sharpen their competitiveness, rather than responding to the social request of being responsible. They form CSR strategy and policy, and integrate CSR into everyday management.The thesis starts with a review of CSR concept and initiatives, and followed by the definition of CSR and its connotation. It depicts an overall CSR picture of multi-national companies, including their CSR motives, principles, performances and reports, as well as evaluation. The thesis focuses on a research of 26 selected large multi-national companies, and as a result, summarizes 6 key issues of CSR management and analyzes the factors that influence CSR practice. In conclusion, based on an analysis of the factors that foster the CSR development in China as well as those hinder it, the thesis gives recommendations to Chinese companies for developing CSR management.
