The consumptive responsibility of the individual is important in human economic life. The consumptive activity of the individual is a prerequisite for the survival and development of the individual. For a long time, the consumptive activity of the individual has always been regarded as a right of birth. The consumptive responsibility of the individual has been ignored. Because of this, the study on the topic is of both theoretical and practical significance.Under Marxist dialectical materialism and historical materialism being our guideline, and absorbing methods from nearby disciplines, the paper analyses the concept and the content of the consumptive responsibility of the individual, discusses the three dimensions concerning the consumptive responsibility of the individual. This paper holds that the sense of responsibility should be incorporated into human consuming life. The article is divided into three parts: the introduction, the body, which is divided into four chapters, and the conclusion. In the introduction, through introducing the current situation of the study on the issue of the consumptive responsibility of the individual abroad and at home, this paper shows that there is no discipline which has explicitly put forward the concept of the consumptive responsibility of the individual, although such disciplines as ethics, etc. have probed into the topic to a certain degree. Based on the achievements already made by these disciplines, the article is intended to make a comprehensive, systematic study on the problem of the consumptive responsibility of the individual. In Chapter One, the historical origin of the idea of the consumptive responsibility for the individual is explored. Our opinion is that it has much to do with the virtues of being thrifty, doing charity, etc. that prevailed in history. In Chapter Two, the paper theoretically defines the concept of the consumptive responsibility of the individual, and points out that the consumptive responsibility of the individual is the responsibility which consumers should undertake for themselves, other people, the society and nature in the process of consuming, and its content reflects the ethics of personal consumption. In Chapter Three, the paper analyzes the three dimensions of the consumptive responsibility of the individual. The consumptive responsibility of the individual includes the responsibility to enhance the quality of life for the individual as a kind of consumptive agent, the responsibility to demonstrate benevolence and the responsibility to promote harmony between man and nature. In Chapter Four, the paper probes into the ethical means to cultivate the sense of consumptive responsibility of the individual, indicating that conscious cultivation of consumptive responsibility in the individual as consumptive agents, moral education from outside society, and the establishment of ethical mechanism that combines the conscious cultivation of consumptive responsibility and the moral education from outside society is necessary. The conclusion summarizes the main ideas of the whole paper. It draws the conclusion that it is valuable and meaningful for realizing harmony between the individual, society and nature when the consumptive responsibility of the individual is incorporated into the consumptive activity of the individual.
