Japan's policy on auto industry plays a very important role in the history of Japan's economic development. This dissertation mainly sets Japan's auto industry development and Japan's policy on auto industry during so-called the rapid economic growth period from 1956 to 1973 as its subjects. By retracing the evolution of Japan's early policy on auto industry, the dissertation analyzes its impact on Japan's auto industry development so as to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the policy's development and changes during the rapid economic growth period. The policy on auto industry during that period was mainly constituted by two different stages. In the first stage, the Japanese government continued to enforce a protective and assistant policy on the auto industry in the early 1950s. In the second stage, the Japanese government started to implement a vigorous policy on auto industry in the middle of 1960s. Based on analyzing the background of the policy-making, presenting the debate on what kind of policy wound be formulated, discussing the content and promulgation of the policy and its effect, the dissertation not only depicts the development process of Japanese auto industry, but also seeks the reason why Japan has become a large and powerful automotive country. Meanwhile, it could provide some reference and revelation for the development of China's auto industry.
