At the late of 1980's, in UK a market-oriented electricity market revolution was started, it was aimed to realize"Separation of generation and transmission, and power pooling". Many developed countries such as the United States, Western Europe and Australia took the initiative in the reform process and created various power markets. Since 1990s', China started to establish power market. In order to improve the efficiency of electricity market, appropriate selections of the electricity market models became a crucial issue. After a complex review of main market models which are employed by the foreign countries, this thesis build an appropriate market model for Chinese electricity industry. The thesis starts with a brief introduction of the background of the electricity market. In Chapter 2, four types of market operation models are analyzed including Monopoly, Purchasing agency, Wholesale competition and Retail competition [1]. Also several problems in the electricity market competition models are discussed which include comparison of bilateral trading and pool trading, the management of spot market and centralized trading over a transmission network.Chapter 3 continues to review the experience of the electricity market in United States, Western Europe and Australia. Also the features of the models are compared in this Chapter.Based on the experience of modern western countries, in Chapter 4, the author gives an appropriate market model for Chinese electricity industry which considers the real situations in China. In North of China, a new market model which includes two levels is employed, the trading inside the local area market are encouraged The last Chapter of this thesis investigates the design and realization of the technique support systems for power market. The function of the trading sub-system, module structure, logic algorithms are carefully analyzed based on the real situations.
