The introduction of competition into a reformed power sector is a very complex process, which is usually based on national energy strategies and policies, economic developments and national grid conditions, etc. It has been recognized that electricity market models usually vary from country to country. Therefore, it is very important and significant to investigate operational models of the electricity market in China, which are related to our national energy strategies and policies, economic developments and national grid conditions. In this thesis, a new operation model of the electricity market separated into different layers and areas in China is presented.First, the thesis summarizes the development of the Chinese electricity market. The present imbalance between the electricity supply and demand in China is analyzed. Furthermore, a series of energy policies, issued by the Chinese government, for solving energy problems are described. Based on the analysis of the current condition of the national power grid and the distribution of available power resources, the present layout of the construction of a super high voltage transmission grid in China is discussed. This is followed by a proposed concept of the development of the electricity market in three dimensions. The current development of the Chinese electricity market has demonstrated the validity of the concept. It could be used to forecast the future prospects of the electricity market in China.Second, based on the comparative analysis of centralization and decentralization models of the electricity market, a new electricity market model is presented. A new electricity market model in super high voltage grid is proposed, in which the long term contracts include financial and physical contracts. Furthermore, research on the operation flow, trading mode and settlement mode of the new electricity market is described.Third, the thesis focuses mainly on the new electricity market model with the related financial contract. The trading process and pricing mode are discussed. Following this, the dispatch schedule method based on"A Merit Order Dispatch (MOD) and the Security Constrained Algorithm"used in the Day-Ahead market is proposed. In addition, a real time trading schedule method based on the"AGC/MGC Dispatch Algorithm"used in the Real-Time market is presented. From the results based on the 207-bus system in China, it can be seen that numerical results demonstrate the correctness and the effectiveness of the operation model and trading method proposed in this thesis. Finally, by analyzing the effects of the operation model on the framework, functions and core methods of the Electricity Market Operation System (EMOS), a design of the EMOS is proposed. The basic idea is to adopt different layered components, such as core algorithms, application functions and subsystems, to build the electricity market operation system according to different market models. The electricity market operation system designed on this basic idea can be flexibly configured according to different market models and has strong adaptability. It has been implemented and has proved to be successful.
