Impression management penetrates every aspect of human life as a universal interpersonal phenomenon. In recent years, it has become a very important research variable in human resource management especially in selection and recruitment. The impression management behaviors which applicants adopt affect the interview results, and then affect their chance of work. So, it is necessary to discuss what impression management behaviors the applicants adopt and what the influencing factors are.This study focused on the applicants, designed questionnaire of applicant impression management tactics, and verified how gender, educational background, subject affect applicants' impression management behaviors, and analyzed how the following factors influence applicants' impression management behaviors: work experience, interview experience, familiarity with job, aspiration for job, ways to learn interview skills.The main conclusions are:1. The applicants often use the following impression management tactics: goal commitment and catering interviewer, self-exhibition, ingratiation, view-observance and enhancing others, behavior-adjustment and non-verbal behaviors, positive excuses, negative excuses;2. There is a correlation between gender and some of the impression management tactics; there is a correlation between gender and self-control;3. Subject has no correlation with impression management tactics or self-control;4. Educational background has a positive correlation with self-exhibition tactics but has no correlation with self-control;5. Familiarity with job has a positive correlation with most of the impression management tactics;6. Work experience has a positive correlation with behavior-adjustment and non-verbal behaviors; it has no correlation with self-control;7. Interview experience, aspiration for job, ways to learn interview skills have a positive correlation with most of the impression management tactics; the interview experience has no correlation with self-control; the aspiration for job and ways to learn interview skills has no correlation with self-control;8. Self-control has negative correlation with all the impression management tactics.
