This article studies on how to use impression management strategies to enhance career success,and with the moderation of political skills at the high level,these strategies will be most effective.On the basis of summing up the past literature review and social exchange theory, the assumptions are made as following,impression management can significantly predict career success,political skills play the moderation on the two variables.On the basic of Jones and Pittman (1982) classification and combined with Chinese cultural background,this article explores another dimension:self-abasement,and career success is composed of the models of subjective and objective career success,using the questionnaire about political skills of Ferris et al(2005),Data of 50 samples which was the MBA holding the working the background in the state-owned enterprises was statistically analysed by SPSS15.0,we modify the index system and form the formal questionnaire at the basis of analysis result. The revised questionnaires are handed out in two large state-owned enterprises,where 395 valid questionnaires were collected for the further analysis.Through exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis using of SPSS15.0 and LISREL8.70,we validate the reliability and validity of the political skills questionnaire in the background of China and find impression management in the stated-owned enterprises has six dimensions:self-promotion, ingratiation, exemplication,intimidation,supplicati-on and self-abasement;career success is composed of objective and subjective career success, competition in the organization and competition out of organization consist of objective career success,subjective career success is divided into job satisfaction and career success.The regression analysis is conducted between the impression management and career success.then the conclusion is found that self-promotion,ingratiation,exemplication and self-abasement can positively and significantly predict career success;intimidation and supplication can negatively and significantly predict object career success,and they can't significantly predict subjective career success;what's more,a hierarchical regression analysis is used to verify the role of moderators.we find the moderation effect of political skills are significant and positive in all the paths,but markedly different degrees.Compared with other researches on impression management and career success,this paper not only clarified that different dimensions of impression management have different influence on objective career success and subjective career success,but also puts these relations into the different levels of political skills which can influence the relationship between independent variable and dependent variable.this paper finds high levels of political skills can positive significantly predict the using of impression management strategies to career success in the state-owned enterprise,which indicates political skills are the "lubricant" in the working relationships.This study is not only innovative in theory, but also the organization's human resources management has a strong practice-oriented.However,the study still has deficiencies such as sample range,and then these should be improved in further researches.
