Research On The Mode Of Fujian-taiwan Agricultural Cooperation And Exchange

Fujian is separated from Taiwan by the Taiwan Straits. The unique geographic advantage and cultural similarity has provided favorable conditions for their experimental cooperation in agriculture.This essay is to discuss the Cross-Straits agricultural cooperation against the backdrop of the development of the Western Taiwan Straits Economic Zone. It is focused on the status quo of the cross-straits relations, their similarities in history, culture and nature, and their complementarities in industrial organizations and agricultural development.The agricultural cooperation between Fujian and Taiwan in the past three decades can be divided into the following five phases: trial, development, further development, post-WTO, and phase after Taiwan 2008 Election. It has transferred from non-governmental to governmental mode, with its scale of trade gradually increasing. Within the restraint of economy and natural conditions, the two trading parties have managed to seek an effective cooperation mode, to achieve the utility maximization.Since 30 years ago, especially since the beginning of the 21st century, Fujian-Taiwan agricultural cooperation has made great achievements. Inevitably, it has encountered some impediments and problems as well. In view of the necessity of market protectionism and technological protectionism, Taiwan authorities has imposed much unreasonable restraint on cross-straits agricultural cooperation. Taiwan Democratic Progressive Party's advocation for Taiwan Independence has become a rigid ideology which greatly hinders the cross-straits industrial cooperation and increased the cost of cross-straits agricultural trade.In November 2001, China mainland and Taiwan joined the WTO, which has made far-reaching influence on the cross-straits agriculture in production, resources, quality and market pattern.While WTO becomes the external driving force of Fujian-Taiwan agricultural cooperation, the implementation of CEPA will establish a closer cooperation mode between Fujian and Taiwan to face the challenge of free trade after joining WTO.The agricultural cooperation between Fujian and Taiwan is the most effective way to advance the agricultural development of Western Taiwan Straits. It's an indispensable part for the development of Western Taiwan Straits Economic Zone.
