With their flexibility and creativity, small-and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) serve as the major contributor of and the driving force behind the national economy of China. Thanks to the great dynamics and potential, SMEs have been valued as an important part of the economy as they are great in number and inevitable in job creation. However, SMEs in China remain underdeveloped despite their strong presence. They are relatively young and inexperienced. Many are developing in absence of managerial strategies. Under such circumastance, this paper is intended to study the theory of cost control in the management of SMEs, and hopefully to shed some light on SMEs as to how to grow in a sound, healthy, and cost-effective manner. This paper's probe into the theories and methods of cost control is highly relevant in the context of the socialist market economy, and will provide references for SMEs in their cost management.This paper takes W Company as the object of case study. By analyzing the status quo and drawbacks of the cost control in the company, this paper introduces theories about cost control and corporate strategy to look at how to optimize the cost structure, which may not necessarily be the less the better. In addition, this paper also provides some advice on the cost control for SMEs. Hopefully with this paper as a reference, SMEs will further attach great importance to the cost control and stay competitive in a sustainable way.
