The intermediary business of commercial banks refers to the non-interest income business that does not influence the on-balance sheet assets and liabilities. The law that bank adjusts continually its business structure for seeking the roads of living and development is embodied in the business adjustment from assets management to liabilities management to assets-liabilities management. To the 70's of the 20th century, commercial banks encountered intense shock. A series of innovation of types of intermediary business make it become an important part of banks. Running intermediary business, assets business and liabilities business are regarded as three big pillar businesses of modern commercial banks. Intermediary business achieves full development, as a result of its advantages of low costs, risk and high income. In developed countries, commercial banks began to expand their intermediary business since 1980s. And till now, the income based on the intermediary business has become an important source of the profits of these banks. The intermediary business can not only improve the quality of the bank's assets and liabilities, but also increase their profitability. In the new situation, developing the intermediary business is the inevitable choice which can raise the benefit, improve the competitiveness, resist the shocks of foreign banks and satisfy the development need as well for the state-owned banks. As the competition has become fiercer and financial risk higher, and investors financial awareness have become strengthened and information& technology has made a big progress, developing the intermediary business and expanding the business field are the difficulties that state-owned banks have to positively face up with. With the great change of the environment in the financial market in our country, it brings not only the opportunities, but also the new risks and challenges. How to balance the opportunities and challenges and how to exert the strength and to avoid the weakness are the issue which are valuable to be studied and explored.This thesis starts from the basic concept of intermediary business and generalizes the strength and weakness, opportunity and threat of state-owned commercial banks in the intermediary business with the method of SWOT based on the research and analyses of them. Then this thesis provides some suggestion and strategies from external macro-environment aspects and internal development strategy ones.
