Researches on LUCC (Land use/cover change) now are the frontier Problem fordiscussion in the researches on the global environmental change. Land use and landcover change (LUCC) is a major part and also a main cause of global environmentalchange , and it has emerged recently as an important focus for land change studies.LUCC is an interaction result of natural, social, political, economic and cultural factor.Oasis is non-terrain sight, which come into being drought climate and base on hun-griness.In the Paper, Cherchen oasis, which is the representative strip oasis and alongwith Cherchen River , is selected as a typical area for this case study. A combinationof remote sensing (RS), geographical information system (GIS) and fractal theory wasused to evaluate the spatial pattern of land use in Cherchen during the period from1970 to 2005. Specifically, land use classification information was extracted fromLandsat TM images of Cherchen from 1970, 1990, 2000 and 2005 under the supportof RS and GIS and then used to generate a spatial database of land use. After more study and exploration, come to the following conclusions. To improvethe understanding of land use change in Cherchen, a fractal model was used to cal-culate fractal indices of different landscape patterns based on the spatial analysisfunction of GIS, after which the fractal dimensions and stabilityindexes (SK) ofspatial structure of the different land use types in each landscape type were calculatedfor different periods. The changes in the spatial patterns of land use in Cherchen werethen quantitativelyanalyzed, and the complexityand stabilityof land use types werediscussed. In the past 30 years, LUCC in Cherchen have arised universal change. Theresults revealed that the fractal dimensions of water increased annuallyfrom1970 to2005, as did the irregular degree of the land use patch shape. In addition, with theexception of water, fractal dimensions of all land use types also increased during theperiod from 1970 to 2000. During that time period, the maximum complexitywas observed, the land use patch shape became more complex and more irregular, and theminimum stabilitywas observed. Conversely, during the period from2000 to 2005,the fractal dimensions were in a decreasing trend, the land use patch shape becamesimpler and regular, and its stabilitygraduallyincreased. The types and characteristics of the driving forces of LUCC are affected by thetemporal and spatial features of the oasis. On the regional scale, the natural drivingforces of LUCC in the Cherchen Oasis include the natural processes, climatic pro-cesses and hydrological processes .Under a specific productivitydevelopment level, human activities affect directlythe evolution process and trend of LUCC.
