Based on Silurian-Devonian lithofacies palaeogeography research, the tectonic background maps, sedimentary face maps, reservoir evaluation maps and other basic geological maps of the center of Tarim basin are drawn in this paper. The Geological Information System was built by applying GIS and virtual reality technique, which can be used to manage the complex exploration geological information and exploration-produced graphics. analyse, design and development of the system were performed by adopting the Object Oriented Method. The developed software (Ichnological and Geological information system) is different from a traditional Database Management System in query, management and analyse essentially. The system includes twelve functional module, which accomplishes biology information synthetically managing, such as information inputting, editing, modifying, query and so on,and other advanced function, such as trace fossils calculating, drawing automatically drill columns or correlograms, sedimentary environment analyzing query, reservoir evaluation query, lithology core simulation, shape and forming process simulation of single trace fossil etc. Three aspect of achievement was acquired in application research as follow:①Exploration drill columns and correlograms of research area were drawn by applying the drawing map automatically functions.②Based on the drawn histograms, the lithology core of research area was simulated by synthesizing trace fossils information, lithology information and physical or chemical materials.③the 3D sedimentary system patterns of research area were drawn by integrating sedimentary information with tectonic information.
