The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a U.S. space-based global navigation satellite system. It provides reliable positioning, navigation, and timing services to worldwide users on a continuous basis in all weather, day and night, anywhere on or near the Earth. It is widely used in military and civilian areas, including travel navigation, geodesy, spacecraft orbit determination, etc.With the development of China's modernization, military applications and industrial need a higher performance of the GPS Timing Receiver. It is necessary to survey the delay of signal in order to calibrate and improve the performance of GPS Timing Receiver on the development of GPS Receiver. Signal simulator main output high dynamic GPS analog signal at present, which is used to test the capture and tracking ability of GPS receiver in dynamic environment. But it's expensive and no second signal. There isn't any signal simulator for calibrating the delay of GPS Timing Receiver in domestic. Therefore, we can study on GPS signal generator which is produced GPS L-band signal and second signal. Because the GPS signal generator is cheap and it has explicit functions, it is regarded as the optimum allocation to measure the delay of signal of GPS Timing Receiver.This paper introduced the basic principles of the Global Positioning System and present situation of GPS signal generator at home and broad, discusses the background and significance of GPS signal generator for delay calibration, described the composition and principle of the system, given key technical indicators of signal generator, and completed some of the key technologies: the production of C/A, binary phase shift keying modulation (BPSK) , frequency synthesis techniques, adopts the development tools of field programmable gate arrays (FPGA), design and realization these technologies. Finally, these technologies were tested and given the simulation results of IF output.
