A newly developed data source, namely, high spatial and temporal resolution cloud drift winds, has been used to augment the often quite scarce data upon which forecasts are based. The sensitivity test experiments (STE) of numerical simulation, in which the cloud drift wind data derived from the GMS-5 satellite imagery are incorporated into the regional ETA-coordinate Model (REM) to modify the initial wind field, for six rainfall processes over the West of China have been performed and compared with the control test experiment (CTE) without using the satellite CDW data. The results show that there is a great improvement in the simulation for 24-hour precipitation forecasts through the adjustment of wind field by incorporating CDW data into the mesoscale model. The area and amount of rainfall obtained by STE are more in agreement with the obtained fact than those from CTE. The impact of CDW data on simulation results is different for different rainfall processes.
