Classifying soil is an important component in land estimate; it ties up with the land estimate of potential, adaptation, economy and continuance; it is an important measure to use infield rationally, protect the finite infield. Classifying soil bases on the rules of Classifying soil of Land Resource Ministry and HaiNan province technical project of manage informational system of Classifying soil 's leveling and assessment and the stable factors of the land quality, at the same time, it is the course of system comparable in the whole country by assessing the nature and economical properties of land and quality differences. However, it is a complex work, it needs a large number of manpower, material resources, money and long period, so it is necessary to develop manage informational system of Classifying soil to help users do their work quickly and well. This paper reviews Classifying soil's actuality and trend in the world, expatiates the ultimatums and methods simply, analyses the principles and methods of it and establishes the HaiNan province informational system of Classifying soil based on GIS. This system developed using Visual Basic6, MapObjects of ESRI and SQL Server2000. It has five functional modules, including data inputting, layer managing, and soil classifying, data outputting, and helping, all above programmed visually based on spatial database, property database and arithmetic model. All results such as controlling, analyzing, collecting, outputting and helping, displayed on the screen in graphs, report forms and stat. Figures and explanations, also can be outputted in map and report forms.Besides some general functions such as the displaying, zooming out and in, roaming and appending special pictures of map, this system realizes map elements' recording, deleting and editing and querying and stating layer's information.
