With the development of microelectronics, using DSP chip in geophysical exploration instruments to improve the efficiency of real-time data processing is a significant research subject. At present, IP instruments are mainly based on single-chip microcomputers or personal computers. But they are not good at signal processing. As a branch of electrical methods, in practice, the pseudo-random multi-frequency IP theory has good effect. However, this method needs a large amount of signal processing. So this paper, which is based on the analysis of digital signal processing and DSP technologies and combined with the pseudo-random multi-frequency IP theory, analyzes constitution and the basic functions of the instrument from two sides of hardware and software, designs the DSP-based general pseudo-random EP surveying system and develops the relative software based on the DSP chip by use of ANSI C and TMS320C3x assembly language. We program according to several arrays' data processing means, such as central gradient array, tri-pole array (always used unite profiling method), dipole-dipole array and symmetric tetra-pole sounding array which are widely used in resistivity method and IP (Induced Polarization) method, and CSAMT array which belongs to electromagnetic observing category. This program realizes data processing and provides graphs of Fs (apparent frequency distribution ratio), P s (apparent resistivity), and (relative phase). This instrument improves the real-time characteristic on data processing and is helpful to analyze the geologic conditions on the field. Moreover, this surveying system not only has a strong versatility, but also is compatible with a wide variety of transmitters to improve the efficiency of the work.
