In coal mine production, the exploitation of coal seam makes more mined-outareas, the collapse of which will make the ground sink and split, devastate the infieldand buildings, and destroy the ecological environments. Hence, it is significant to usegeophysical methods efficiently and economically to survey and evaluate themined-out areas and give feasible control measures. In the latest years, manygeophysicists have done research on the subjects and make a lot of practical findings. But as a whole, the research of the survey of mined-out areas is still in a developingstage, and the principles and the means of the survey are faulty. The successfulexperience and data accumulation on the research in China and aboard mainly includecollecting data, investigating and visiting, drilling, experiments indoor and numericalsimulation. At the beginning of the paper we instruct the causation of the mined-out areas ,the geological property and geophysical property. And from the coal-mining propertywe deduce the exploration methods with 3D reflection seismic. We analysis thereflection waves in the mined-out areas , and get the coefficeients that affecting theseismic data picked up. We also get the processing technologies about the mined-outareas. Through Analyzing the data of the mined-out areas, we sum up some propertyand symbol about them.According to the geophysical feature of the mined-out areas, the fundamental ofthe Rayleigh wave method for detecting the mined-out areas was discussed. How themined-out areas affect the Rayleigh wave dispersion curves were analyzed, and howthe feature of the dispersion curves vary with the mined-out areas were also discussed. Then, from a practical application, the validity and practicability of this method usedfor the shallow core mined-out areas was presented.
