Due to the special nature of ilmenite, it occurs to many issues by the blast furnace such as high slag viscosity and the mobility of poor iron slag and high rate of iron loss. It is also a necessary requirement for the development of iron and steel technology, with the research and development of new smelting processes and technology. Oxygen top-blown smelting reduction ironmaking technology is a new smelting process which has fused with the reduction of the fast reaction, heating transfer well and so all. It can be achieve normal production smelting ilmenite by the upper part of oxygen-enriched air injection, which can bring on the slag layer of high oxygen potential to curb the high melting pointTi(C,N) generation and to carry out a good separation of iron slag.This paper mainly uses the thermodynamic to calculate the feasibility and superiority in the molten state at different temperatures and the conditions, with the modern detection methods and analytical tools, such as X-ray. The reduction behavior and micro-mechanism in smelting reduction of ilmenite is taken depthly, which enriches the theoretical basis of ilmenite smelting. Some important conclusions are obtained in the following:1) Through thermodynamic analysis, using oxygen top-blown smelting reduction smelting technology is theoretically feasible.2) The mineral phase composition and porosity have undergone significant changes by using of pre-oxidation treatment of the ilmenite. which can effectively shorten the restoration time and improve the reduction degree of ores and the rate of metals.3) Basicity is significant impact on the quality of hot metal. During the basicity from 0.7 to 1.5,the quantity of hot metal is increased and then decreased; Although the content of TiO2 is up to 20% or more in the slag, it can be also smelt the iron ore which contains TiO2 6.47%,alkalinityR=1.1.4) It can improve combustion efficiency, enhanced heat transfer and energy efficient using by injection of oxygen-enriched air, while increasing the oxygen potential in the slag layer, that can inhibit high melting point Ti(C,N) generation and lower slag viscosity effectively. This paper researches on the oxygen top-blown smelting ilmenite smelting reduction technology about the reduction behavior and the feasibility by the way of oxygen-enriched air injection to enhance combustion rates and inhibit formation of high melting point material. It has enriched smelting ilmenite to strengthen the basic theory and basic experimental data through the thermodynamic theory analysis and a large number of experimental studies. This technology can utilize China's abundant ilmenite resources effectively, which can help the China's iron and steel industry to be sustainable development, so it is an important significance.
