Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) is a multifunctional, water-soluble fine chemical and has lots of usages. The synthesis of PEO wih low-middle relative molecular weight, including the preparation of calcium ammoniate multi-phase catalyst, the polymerization of ethylene oxide and the characterization of products and the design of pilot-scale production were studied in detail in this paper. The conclusions were as follows:The component of the active substance of the catalyst was affirmed as H2N...Ca-O-CH(CH3)-CH3 by FT-IR. The catalyst was scanned by SEM, and it was shown that the catalyst was well decentralized which can offer well-proportioned active substance. The polymerization of ethylene oxide and the preparation of calcium-ammoniate catalyst were investigated in order to optimize the experimental conditions. A model based upon an orthogonal analysis was developed to analyze the data collected for the material dosage, solvent dosage, solicitation temperature, reaction temperature and reaction time dependences of the yield and relative molecular weight in PEO production system. Moreover, the experimental results was used to PEO pilot-scale production. PEO products in pilot-scale production were compared with those from several companies. Their propertical differences was eligible. Finally, the equipment parameters for industrialization were estimated on the basis of PEO reaction thermodynamics. The pilot-scale production equipments of 2 tone catalyst per year were designed.
