In this work the influence of formula and compounding processing on the flame retardant (FR) property, the impact property and processability of PC/ABS alloy was investigated. Through the formulation and compounding process optimazation, a reference of formula and compounding condition selection on producing a high quality PC/ABS alloy was offered.By adjusting the content of flame retardant BPA-DP and ABS, comparing the FR property, it can be concluded that the system could achieve good FR property when the content of BPA-DP is 10% and that of ABS is 10%-15%.BPA-DP has plasticization effect to PC/ABS, which is beneficial for processing but bad for impact property. To obtain high impact property, the percentage of BPA-DP in the system should be less than 10. ABS also contributed to processability while had a complex influence on the impact property. The impact property of the alloy could be optimized when the ABS content reached 10%-15%. Using a mixture of high flow PC and low flow PC instead of a single type could better balance the impact property and processability. High flow PC could improve processability and low flow PC contributed to the impact property. By comparing different ratios of these two types of PC, it showed that the alloy could have a good combination property when the HFPC/LFPC ratio is 30:40.The study of compounding processing on this halogen-free FR PC/ABS alloy showed that weak screw reached good impact and broad processing window. Either too weak or strong screw was disadvantageous for the alloy property. However, it could be improved by adjusting the compounding rotation speed and output. The feeding of liquid flame retardant in the Zone 2 (melt conveying section) would reduce the mixing effect of composites which led to a poor impact system. When changing to feed in Zone 7 (middle section), the composite could obtain a good mixing effect and impact property as well.
