Digital inkjet synthetic paper is used in high-level works of art, maps, pictures, books and other high-end printings. It is typically advertising material with the advantages of energy-saving and environmental properties. However, the surface tension of synthetic paper is low which makes greatly limits its applications. Therefore, the surface of the paper needs to be improved with advanced modification methods. The purpose of this study is to synthesis a kind of water-borne resin adhesives for modifying synthetic paper. In a variety of water-based resin, water-based acrylic resin has the properties of environmentally friendly, high glossiness and good rheological change. Therefore,a kind of water-borne acrylics resin coating is designed and synthesized by emulsion polymerizations to modify the surface of digital inkjet synthetic paper. The formulation of water-based acrylic resin, the gum base composition and processes were mainly investigated. The results showed that using butyl acrylate(BA), methyl methacrylate(MMA) and acrylic acid(AA) as primary monomers with the appropriated emulsification and trigger system mixed with curing agent can prepare the water-based acrylic resins demonstrating good performance and excellent modification effects. The ratio of resin and curing agent were analyzed, and the optimized processing parameters such as the best curing temperature and curing time were determined through the experiments. After modification, the surface energy of digital inkjet synthetic paper increased significantly and the adhesion between the ink absorption layer and the synthetic paper was goodBesides, a kind of macromolecular emulsifier had been found in the emulsion products that had been characterized and confirmed by laser particle size analyzer and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).
