The sulfur dioxide (SO2) and the carbon dioxide (CO2) resulted from the coal combustion is the most important pollutants. With the rapidly increasing in coal consumption, flue gas emissions increased, which caused serious environmental pollution and threatened the human health. Therefore, how to remove SO2 and CO2 from flue gas to reduce the emissions has become the world's most urgent task. The recent development of desulfurization and decarburization technologies for the flue gas was summarized and reviewed, as well as some results obtained by our research group are summarized and reviewed, too. With polyethylene glycol -400 (PEG-400), polyethylene glycol -200 (PEG-200), and polyethylene glycol - water system (PEGW) as the absorption solvent, the gas-liquid equilibrium (GLE) data in the absorption of SO2 and CO2 respectively have been determinated. By the way, the IR and UV spectra of PEG-200, PEGW and absorbed ability of them for SO2 and CO2 have been performanted. After comparing the gas-liquid equilibrium (GLE) data of SO2 with CO2, the PEG-400, PEG-200, and PEGW can selectively absorb SO2. And the experimental results are appearing as follows:(1) The PEG-400 and PEG-200 absorption capacity to SO2 were investigated respectively, the GLE data at 122.60 kPa and 25℃or 35℃have been determined. Meanwhile, the absorption mechanism of PEG-200 on SO2 has investigated on IR and UV spectrometers. The results showed that the PEG-200 has strong absorptive capacity to SO2, probably for the hydrogen bonding association between the molecules of PEG and SO2.(2) The absorption ability of PEGW to SO2 has been determined. The results showed that the minimum absorption ability of PEGW to SO2 is at the concentration of 40% of PEGW.(3) The absorption ability of PEGW or PEG to CO2 has been determined. The results showed that the absorption ability of CO2 in high concentration of PEGW is low.
