Support column is the important supporting component of hydraulic support. its carrying capacity directly decides the performance of Hydraulic support, and most of hydraulic support breakdown is related to the column failure. With greatly increasing of working resistance recently, large diameter cylinder with 400 mm, 420 mm, 450 mm, 500 mm are successfully researched and developed, high performance and reliability are become new target of technical staff. MT313-1992 “Technical Condition of Hydraulic Support Column” and MT97-1992 “Technical Condition of Hydraulic Support Jack are replaced by GB25974.2-2010 “Technical condition of support column and jack, Section 2 in Technical Condition of Mining Hydraulic Support”. New standard is modified and improved based on old standard, studying the similarities and differences between new and old standard and making support columns adapt new standard is a problem for the designer.The paper is organized as follows. Section 2 comparatively studies New and Old standard and states the differences, mainly attains key points of support column design calculation against New National Standard; Design calculation of support column under New National Standard is presented in Section 3. Respectively study the column intensity, stability, overhanging limitation and guide ring, and calculation for ZY12000/25/50 D shield hydraulic support with 400 mm double-telescopic column is provided. Finite element analysis(FEA) aiming to the leg intensity, stability, overhanging limitation and guide ring are given and make comparison for the result of two kinds of calculation, put forward scientific and reasonable calculation method in Section 4. Finally, optimizing the structure dimension based on study result, comparing optimized leg parameters and the problem being paid attention to during optimization design are discussed.
