As a special type of thermally coupled distillation, Dividing Wall Column was a special column which was installed a vertical plate in the conventional column, it can separate multi-component mixture to high purity. Compared with the conventional sequence column, Dividing Wall Column not only reduce the investment of equipment and occupied area, most importantly, it can greatly reduce the energy consumption in the process of distillation. In order to get the scope of use of Dividing Wall Column, using mathematical programming software Matlab to simulate, its energy saving effect was studied.Then experiment of Dividing Wall Column was implemented by the self-designed pilot experiment equipment.First, the mathematical model of Dividing Wall Column and conventional sequence column were established, to use mathematical programming software Matlab to simulate and to study on its energy saving effect. Then these three kinds of distillation column were simulated by the software of Matlab, and compared the energy-saving under same separation requirementsindifferent feed composition and relative volatility, to findits scope of application.The results show that the dividing wall column is mainly applicable for the feed with concentration of middle component>0.5(mass fraction) and with ESI near 1,αBC near 2.Secondly, the separation of alcohol ternary mixture was researched by the self-designed pilot experiment equipment. Including of orthogonal experiments and single factor conditional experiments, theinfluences to separation performance of Dividing Wall Column werediscussed under different feed composition, reflux ratio and ratio of liquid distribution, and the optimal operation conditions were ascertained.The experimental results show that when the feed ratio to 1:3:1, reflux ratio of 8, the liquid distribution ratio of 3:7, twomaterial system has a better separation effect.In the end, based on the experiment results, these resultswere fit by using Matlab.Through simulation analysisof the energy saving of Dividing Wall Column and the pilot experiment, these results can provided a basis for industrial applications of DWC.
