In this work, activated carbons fiber(ACF) were prepared from cotton by KOH activation process. To study the effect of the preparation process of each variable, SEM, Nitrogen adsorption, IR, XRD and XPS were used for the characterization of ACF. The ACF adsorption behavior of heavy metal ion Cu2 +, Pb2 + was studied.According to the L16(45) orthogonal experimental study found that the different factors in the preparation of the influence degree of the iodine adsorption value from big to small is the concentration of KOH, carbonization temperature, precarbonization temperature, carbonization time and precarbonization time. Analysis and research the iodine value of single factor change process. By thermogravimetric analysis of the KOH activation method for each temperature heat weight loss phase ACF was studied. Concluded that the reaction between KOH and cotton raw materials that may occur and studied the thermal decomposition mechanism.Characterization of surface physical and chemical properties was done with sample of ACF-750 ℃, ACF-850 ℃and the blank cotton. Characterization methods with microscope, SEM, IR, XRD and XPS. SEM analysis found that ACF is better to keep the original cotton fiber structure, fiber breakage occurred when temperature increase. According to the surface area and pore size distribution found that nitrogen adsorption- desorption curve belong toⅠtype. It means that was the standard microporous adsorbent.By BET analysis, ACF mainly microporous pore distribution, pore size <2 nm. With the increase of carbonization temperature than the surface area increases. At the same time, potassium activation mechanism was verified. By IR spectrum of the reaction changes of various processes cotton fiber groups, and groups on the composition of products ACF. It found that activation reaction cotton fiber structure has changed the structure of amorphous carbon and high carbon content occurs by XRD analysis. By XPS analysis showed the main product in the form of compound C, O presence of two element without other impurities.Select a higher yield orthogonal sample 9 to adsorb heavy metal ions Cu2+, Pb2+. The results showed that the adsorption ACF found significant compared with blank test, especially adsorption of Pb2+. The study found that temperature compared to concentrations has little influence on the adsorption of ACF. This is due to the adsorption of metal ions to ACF is physical adsorption that is not affected by reaction heat absorption. Adsorption capacity of ACF increases with time after the first increases and then decreases. This is due to the adsorption equilibrium has been reached at a certain time when the time continues increasing desorption reaction so the amount of adsorption decreased.
