Metal cutting tool manufacturers have high demands towards the precision of dimesion,shape and position. In order to ensure the quality of the tools, manufactueres must conduct thegeometric precision test in accordance with national standards. Side and face milling cutters arecommonly used in milling machine parts, and the national standard GB / T6119-2012 poses rigidrequirements towards the "circular blade internal hole axis of radial circle dance positiontolerance" of side and face milling cutter. The standards stipulate that the deviation of the axisfrom the datum axis of the cutter(whose diameter is less than 80mm) must be≤0.05 mm.The traditional detection methods is to use of a mandrel with a boss and a purelymechanical manual detection mode dial gauge combinations of samples drawn cutter sampling.However, due to the large quantities of tool products, high geometric precision, high laborintensity of testing personnel, low detection efficiency, and frequent occurence of misjudgmentdue to human causes, the quality detection of side and face milling cutters are confronted withhigher requirements. With the continuous development of computer technology, optics,electronics, software engineering, signal processing and system control technology, the priorityfor those companies which want to transform, update or enhance the detection efficiency andaccuracy comes to using of advanced quality detection technology, improvingt of the laborintensity of testing personnel and ensuring the reliability of quality detection. This paper,integrating the actual demand for quality testing tool of Taizhou tool manufacturers, carries outthe design and application research of side and face milling cutters machine vision detectionsystem.1)This paper analyzes the background and significance of side and face milling cuttermachine vision detection technique, and describes in detail the differences between machinevision detection methods and manual detection methods. This paper refers to a lot of literaturesto understand the application and development trend in the field of machine vision technologyand introduces the machine vision detection principle, structure of detection system components,the influence factors in the process of detection and the categories of detection system and itsselection principles.2) According to the structural features of side and face milling cutters and accuracyrequirements of cutters, this paper designs the hardware and software of side and face millingcutter machine vision detection system after taking full consideration of the actual situation oftool manufacturers. In terms of the hardware system design, this paper eleborates on the lightingdesign, the selection of the camera, optical lens, and motion control card, focusing on designingand calculating of ball screw and motor.3)According to the detection principle of side and face milling cutter, this paper researchestheory of image processing and algorithm,and describes the principle and process of imageprocessing,and analyzes principle and implementation of image algorithm.In addition,This paperrefers to the study of the principles of image algorithm to parametric design software for visualinspection.4)The paper has introduced a method of camera calibration,by using the way of standardblock to achieve the calibration of the camera,with more highly calibration analysising andfitting among the camera height,pixel size and actual size,obtains the relevant calibrationparameters and realizes the transformation between the image plane coordinate and spatialcoordinate system.5) According to the national standard of side and face milling cutter, by using the side andface milling cutter machine vision detection system, this paper does detection experiments to testthe radial runout of side and face milling cutter, including the detection experiment of rationalityof the hardware structure of detection system, the accuracy of detection precision and thedetection speed, etc. The experiment results show that the detection system can be used forquality test of side and face milling cutters, with accurate detection, and high detection rate. Thedetection system realizes the machine vision detection of side and face milling cutters, verifiesthe feasibility of software systems, effectively guarantees the radial runout meet the requirementof product precision, and is successfully applied in the actual production of enterprises, whichgreatly reduce the labor intensity of the detection of workers, and improve the detectionefficiency.
