Since World War Ⅱ, the radar passive jamming technology has been rapidly developed. A series of passive jamming equipments, mainly include chaff, infrared bombs, and smoke bombs, have been developed and equipped to the sea, land, air and space combatant platforms. But with the development of radar anti-jamming technology, especially the anti-chaff technology, operational efficiency of traditional passive jamming has been severely tested, showing some limitations in use. Therefore, to develop an efficient, practical, inexpensive absorptive passive jamming material, with chaff, smoke, and other conventional passive jamming material to counter radar detector and multi-mode precision guided weapons, has important practical significance. In this paper, the limitations of the existing passive jamming materials and the problems in the development of currently absorptive passive jamming materials have been analyzed. The method that using wet chemical technology, such as sol-gel, to produce Ba Fe12O19/glass fiber absorptive chaff based with glass fibers has been pointed out. The structure and properties of the material were tested by means of X ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, vector network analyzer, arch method etc. The effects of process parameters on the structure and wave absorbing properties of the barium ferrite and absorptive chaff materials have been mainly discussed. And the attenuation mechanism and application of the absorptive chaff were discussed. The optimal process parameters of barium ferrite prepared by sol-gel technology were determined by studying the effect of material composition, PH value, and heat treatment process on the properties of barium ferrite. In addition, the electromagnetic wave loss mechanism of barium ferrite was analyzed. Though the above research, the basic preparation process of Ba Fe12O19/glass fiber absorptive chaff was obtained. The Ba Fe12O19/glass fiber absorptive chaff was prepared by sol-gel technology and dip-coating technology, with barium ferrite coated on the surface of glass fibers. Study shows that the film on the Ba Fe12O19/glass fiber absorptive chaff is significant influenced by the process parameters, and multiple coating can improve the attenuation efficiency of the sample. Data show that the 10 times coated samples have a best reflectivity of(15GHz,-6.65 d B), the bandwidth of reflectivity lower than-5d B is11.8 GHz, having a high practical value. In addition, the simulation experiments showed that under the same chaff amount, adjusting the dispensing density of chaff can adjust wave absorbing characteristics of absorptive chaff groups.
