This research is commissioned by the enterprise to modify White mud fibers which is made of solid waste, such as white mud, fly ash, coal gangue for papermaking. As well as study the performance in papermaking. The purpose was to make White mud fibers be more suitable for the paper industry.(1) The synthesis of White mud fibers modifierWe used the polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) and aluminum sulfate to synthesize the hydrophobic modifiers, which then covered on the surface of White mud fibers to modify the White mud fibers. Using the influence on the performance of paper by modified White mud fibers as indexes,we explored the best condition of modifiers-synthesizing by orthogonal experiment. The results showed that the best conditions to obtain the best strength properties of paper were the temperature 80 ℃, the time 90 min, m(PVA): m(aluminum sulfate) / g 1:0.5. When the amount of white clay fibers was 40%, comparing the paper which was added modified White mud fibers with added unmodified White mud fibers, we found that the retention increased by 15.9%;when the amount of White mud fibers was 30%, comparing the paper which was added modified White mud fibers with added unmodified White mud fibers, we found that the central pressure and tensile strength were increased by 25%.(2) Reaching on the modification process of White mud fibersThis article studied modification of the surface of the White mud fibers with polyvinyl alcohol as well as the impact factors of White mud fibers modification, such as the amount of modifier, modification temperature and modification time. The results were evaluated through the factors of fiber weight-loss, paper tensile strength and ring-crushed and tear. The results showed that the best conditions were modifier 3% of the weights of White mud fibers, the modified time 1.5 h and the modified temperature 60 ℃. Finally, the SEM was adopted to analysis the modifying results.(3) Using Cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide to modify the surface of White mud fibers.We modified White mud fibers by using CTAB, then obtained the best conditions by the single factor experiments: the amount of modifier, modification time and the temperature which impact on the effect of modified White mud fibers. We use of sensory evaluation methods, screening method and SEM to characterize the modified White mud fibers. The modifications were successful. The structures were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. The changes of the form of fibers surface were observed by the scanning electron microscopy(SEM). Meanwhile, we used the White mud fibers and plant fibers in papermaking, and tested the physical properties of the paper to analyze modification effect on White mud fibers.
