Grinding is mainly used for precision machining. The grinding process removes the material from the surface of the workspace by crushing, the formation of wear debris and particle breakages are included. The process generates grinding force, grinding heat and scratches, which are the basic parameters considered in grinding process research. The physical quantities just like grinding force and surface characterize the essential feature and law in the grinding force, so the study on physical quantities as grinding force and surface helps to get a deep cognition for grinding process. The experimental device is made on CNC lathe in this thesis to systematically study the grinding performance of45steel. The process of single-grit grinding is simulated by finite element software to improve the grinding surface quality. The study covers the following four parts.(1)Based on the experiments about single abrasive grain grinding in the previous research, a new method of single abrasive grain grinding test is proposed, which is realized at high grinding speed. The experiment devices are designed, and the grinding force measurement system is set up.(2)The low-speed scratch experiments are conducted on the surface of work-piece made of45steel. Scratches are observed by white light interferometer. Scratch depth is measured to research the morphology of the scratches produced at different pressure in low grinding speed.(3) The single grit grinding experiments are conducted on the work-piece surface made of45steel. The grinding force in different grinding depth and speed is measured to research the effect on grinding force by different grinding depth and speed.(4)The finite element model of single-grit grinding is made to research the mechanism of single-grit grinding from the simulation perspective. The grinding process of single diamond grit in different condition is simulated by finite element software. The simulated results are analyzed from the two aspects of grinding temperature and force, and the effect on grinding force and temperature by grinding speed and depth is researched.
