Nd:GSAG crystal has received much attention in recent years as the active medium of the laser for vapor detection. Considering the relative advantages of transparent ceramics compared to crystals, the research on Nd:GSAG transparent ceramic is necessary, which has few reports currently. In addition, Cr3"1" can be added to the material as the fluorescent sensitizer of Nd3+. thus the research on Cr,Nd:GSAG nanopowders is significant and helps to the study on Nd:GSAG laser transparent ceramic. The main contents in this paper are as follows:(1) Nd:GSAG/Cr,Nd:GSAG polycrystalline powders were prepared by co-precipitation method with ammonia as the precipitant and sol-gel combustion method with citric acid as the chelating agent. The effects on the quality of powders in the two methods were analysed.(2) TG-DTA, XRD, FT-IR, Raman, TEM and PL were used to characterize the thermal stability, phase transition, morphology and luminescent properties of Nd:GSAG/Cr,Nd:GSAG powders. The structural parameters were obtained by Rietveld structure refinement.(3) Nd:GSAG powders with fine granularity, distribution and good luminescent properties were selected to prepare the transparent ceramic. Biscuits with high density and uniform distribution were obtained by the molding process of cold isostatic pressing combined with uniaxial direct pressure. Exploring the principle of sintering, Nd:GSAG transparent ceramics were obtained by non-pressure sintering. Furthermore, in the paper the transparent mechanism of ceramics was discussed, combining with the microstructures of the Nd:GSAG ceramics observed by SEM.
