The high energy industry makes an important contribution to the economic progress and the industrial development in the contemporary when all the countries spare no efforts to achieve modernization. As a typical representative of high energy industry, the electric arc furnace has got the irreplaceable position in the field of steel smelting with its huge advantages in economic and technical aspects. This paper takes the electric arc furnace as an example and carries out a series of researches on its own nature and some related issues. The AC electric arc furnace has a series of advantages such as the high thermal efficiency, the flexibility of temperature control and the excellent economic performance. But at the same time, it also has the shortcomings such as poor stability, low power factor and the disturbance to the grid in the process of smelting. With the gradual increase of the electric arc furnace smelting capacity and the serious harm it causes to the power grid, the issues produced by the electric arc furnace operation also become increasingly significant and it is imminent to study the targeted analyses and solutions.First of all, this paper analyzes the existing AC arc theory and gets the mathematical expression of arc resistance which can reflect the characteristics of the arc from the physical nature of the electric arc furnace’s operation. Besides, the paper completes the construction of the model of the electric arc furnace system in the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment and carries out the validation by simulation. Basing on this situation, this paper modifies the theoretical model of the arc resistance and determines the sensitive parameters of the electric arc resistance expression, constructs the simulation circuit of the sensitive parameters and analyzes the influence of the minimum value of arc column temperature, the length of the arc and the excitation frequency to the electric arc furnace operation voltage and the volt-ampere characteristic. Besides, it also analyzes the relationship between the sensitive parameters and the modified model by simulation. This paper studies the power quality problems caused by the electric arc furnace system of an iron and steel smelting enterprises by using the modified model of the electric arc furnace, gets the solutions to improve power quality by simulation and calculation and proves the SVC devices will play a significant role in compensating the reactive power, filtering out the harmonic and reducing the voltage fluctuation.The modified model given in this paper improves the existing research methods based on the AC electric arc to a large degree. The selection of the sensitive parameters, the construction of the analysis circuit and the analysis conclusion help to deepen the research of the electric arc furnace model. The establishment of the relevant electrical system simulation model and the analysis summary of the running data also provide technical tool to the related research.
