The directional solidification technology is making the liquid metal high undercooling during the solidification to establish the temperature gradient along a certain direction in the solid metal and liquid metal, so it can make the solidification along the opposite direction of the heat flow after the nucleation of liquid metal. The directional solidification technology can significantly reduce the transverse grain boundaries and obtain the columnar organization or single crystal structure to improve the high temperature properties and mechanical properties. According to the directional solidification ingot production situation and the heat insulation of air, this paper investigates the feasibility of the hollow-sidewall directional solidification method to produce heavy steel ingots. In order to further improve the heat preservation effect, insert the insulating plates in the hollow-side wall and design the experiments to verify the insulation performance and influence parameters of hollow-sidewall. Experimental results show that:After joining the hollow-side wall, the temperature of the outer-wall declines, the effect of insulation is obvious. After inserting the heat insulation board, the temperature of outer-wall declines obviously and t he effect of i nsul ati on is more obvious. The i ns ertion of a heat insulation board, thermal equilibrium heat flux is reduced about40%~50%. The inserting plate number, thermal equilibrium heat flux is small, thermal insulation effect is better, can consider the insulation requirements, production costs and other factors to determine the number of inserted plate. For the directional solidification, the application of hollow air gap, the side wall thermal insulation effect is i m p r o v e d, c a n p r e v e n t t h e m o l t e n s t e e l i n t h e s i d e w a l l o f s t e e l ingot solidification, improve the performance of. The hollow air gap insulation technology, applied to the riser design, can increase the thermal resistance of heat transfer decreases the riser, riser riser, significantly improve the insulation effect, delay the solidification of liquid steel in the riser in time, so that the riser size is greatly reduced, bring an obvious benefit.
