Design, synthesis and application of polyoxometalate-based nanocarbon materials (mainly POM/CNTs composite materials and POM/graphene composite materials) have nowadays gained more and more attention by scientists including chemists, material-scientists. POM-based nanocarbon materials have shown great potential to meet the challenges in electrocatalysis, lithium ion batteris, supercapacitors, sensor devices and other cutting-edge technologies. In order to develop the POM-based nanocarbon materials, we should firstly enrich the methodology of the functionalization of carbon nanotubes by POMs.In this thesis, we have developed a series of POM/SWNT composite materials that possess excellent potential in bio-and electrochem-applications, in which two main synthetic pathways can be concluded, that are covalent and noncovalent modification. Noncovalent functionalization can be achieved using a range of intermolecular interactions between POMs and nanocarbons, mainly including electrostatic interactions, π-π stacking and Layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly. When used as bio-materials, to maintain the characters of the components physically and chemically is highly important. As such, through π-π stacking we have successfully functionalized CNTs by Keggin-type POM and applied the as-synthesized Keggin/SWNTs composie materials in adsorption of human serum albmin. One of the typical approaches used to functionalize nanocarbons with POMs employs POM clusters where a pendant amine has been introduced via the functional group. This moiety can then be linked to oxidized nanocarbons through the formation of amides. In this thesis, we have made the Anderson/SWNTs composite materials and achieved enhanced electrochemical performance when using it as anode materials of lithium ion batteries.
