The energy crisis is one of the most important challenges facing the world today. China is also a lean-fuel country. China’s automobile fuel consumption accounted for more than half of the fuel consumption, and the number of cars in China is increasing rapidly at the same time. So, seeking for alternative energy for vehicle is particularly urgent. Manufacturing fuel through coal tar hydrogenation, can not only alleviate the shortage of fuel resources, but also expand the downstream utilization industry and achieve high efficient utilization of coal tar. As to the hydrogenation diesel manufacturing from coal tar, researching the comprehensive performance of it is very necessary for the guidance of the scientific and efficient application of it.The paper introduces the production process of manufacturing fuel through coal tar hydrogenation firstly. Manufacturing fuel through coal tar hydrogenation includes three part of pretreatment of raw materials, hydrogenation and fuel separation. Hydrogenation reaction generally includes two aspects of hydrofining and hydrocracking. This paper introduces several kinds of common conversion technology of coal tar hydrogenation, and analyses the process characteristics, advantages and disadvantages and application examples and application examples of each technique.The physicochemical property of hydrogenation diesel was tested according to requirement of the national standard for vehicle diesel on 0# diesel. And analyzes and researches the physicochemical property of hydrogenation diesel basing on the testing results. The most of items of physicochemical property meet the requirements of the national standard for vehicle diesel. It has a good property of evaporation, low temperature fluidity, lubrication and cleanness. It has a higher calorific value per unit mass than 0# diesel. But the low flash point lead to its poor safety, the low cetane ratio lead its poor ignitability, the high viscosity and density have an adverse effect on its property atomization. And the aromatic content is high.Implement the bench test of hydrogenation diesel on the diesel of Yunneidongli 4100 QBZL Without any adjustment. In the case of using hydrogenation diesel of Tianyuan and Fuyou. The power was improved significantly. The fuel consumption rate increased slightly but it was economical compared with 0# diesel considering the actual price. NOX emissions and CO emissions increase slightly. Soot emissions and HC emissions increased by a relatively large range.
