Melamine phosphate(MP) and melamine polyphosphate(MPOP) is a new pattern N-P intumescent flame retardant.Its excellent halogen-free flame retardancy is excellent.In this paper, the Melamine phosphate(MP) and melamine polyphosphate(MPOP) were prepared via urea phosphate.The thermal decomposition properties of the products were characterized using thermogravimetric analysis.Using urea formaldehyde resin(UF),silicone acrylic emulsion(SEA) and pure acrylic emulsion(PAE) as base material and the final product(MP and MPOP)prepared in the optimum reaction conditions as dehydration catalyst were used to prepare UF/MP SEA/MP PAE/MP UF/MPOP SEA/MPOP and PAE/MPOP Six kinds of waterborne intumescent flame retardant coatings.Their properties were evaluated by SEM, EDS,mechanical test, thermogravimetry, limit oxygen index test,vertical burning test and cone calorimetry analysis.To explore the effect of MP and MPOP addition on properties of fire retardant coatings, respectively comparing the performance of adding MP and MPOP flame retardant coatings.The conclusions that we got in the experiments were as following:The decomposition of MP is divided into six stages, each stage of the decomposition temperature respectively is 192.85℃,260.34℃,308.64℃,379.45℃,440.32℃ and 557.30℃.The decomposition of MPOP is divided into six stages, each stage of the decomposition temperature respectively is 238.54℃,386.54℃,441.21℃and 598.51℃.(2)Flame retardant coatings have good stability.(3)When the MP or MPOP was added into the coating,the MP and MPOP both can improve the thermal stability and flame retardancy of the composites,but With the increase of MP or MPOP, thermal stability and flame retardant properties of flame retardant coatings showed first increased and then decreased.And for UF/MP,SEA/MP, UF/MPOP,SEA/MPOP four kinds of flame retardant coatings,when thecontent of MP and MPOP was 25%,and for PAE/MP, PAE/MPOP two kinds of flame retardant coatings, ihen the content of MP and MPOP was 20%,coating of flame retardant performance is the best, best synergistic flame retardant effect of each composition(4)With the comparison of the Several kinds of fire retardant coatings which add MP or MPOP,urea formaldehyde resin and the nitrogen phosphorus flame retardant is the best synergistic flame retardant effect.
