The paper reviewed a large number of domestic and foreign literature. In this paper, terrestrial coal series mudstone is the research object. We examine the mineral composition, element content, microstructure and the original rock mechanics characteristics With image processing tool of Matlab, we analyze the obtained microstructure image. And we also study the relationship between micro fabric and mechanical properties. Mathematical statistics is adopted for determining the weight of each single-factor index of the microstructure. Finally, we get a parameter which reflects the microstructure of. terrestrial coal series mudstone. Combining with the mechanical characteristics, we establish a multiple linear regression model.Firstly, based on relevant technology and method of digital image processing, we raise steps and methods for meso-image processing of coal series mudstone. Image enhancement is used to preprocess for the images. And we use threshold segmentation of gray-scale and edge detection algorithms for image segmentation. At last, we extract the parameters of the microstructure features.Secondly, with the mechanical strength tests, we examine the compression strength, the tensile strength, and the shear strength of the terrestrial coal series mudstone. And we continually analysis the relationship between micro fabric and its mechanical properties.Thirdly, using principal component analysis study the method of comprehensive quantitative evaluation of the microstructure information. A relatively reasonable composite quantification parameter that reflects the other single-factor is established.Combined with the conventional mechanical parameters, we establish a reasonable mathematical relationship by multiple linear regression. At the end, we can look into the microstructure parameters by the conventional mechanical characteristic parameters.
