The research about thirty years overseas has showed the earth抯 surface runoff has played an important role on surface water pollution. After the effective controlling of the point sources pollution, the significance of this impact will be more obvious. In the past, highway road surface runoff is usually considered to be part of the earth~s surface runoff. However, it has become an individual nonpoint source class because of its high pollution intensity and severe impact brings to receiving surface water bodies.Highway road surface runoff , one of the important constitutions of the earth抯 surface runoff which bears the characteristic of non-point source pollution has been studied in this thesis. The constitutions and concentrations of pollutants the correlations of these constitutions have been given. Combined with some overseas studies, the correlation of pollutant concentration to traffic volume and pavement surface type, the correlations of discharged pollutant load to runoffprecipitation have also been studied. Through careful analysis it has been accepted that annual pollutant load method and mathematics model method are two useful ways to study the impact of runoff on receiving water bodies. It also provide some effective runoff management methods such as road cleaningcontrolling the use of deicer, vegetation control, wet detention pond, infiltration system and wetland.These study results can provide some fundamental material and methods to environmental administrated department in order to control non-point source pollution and protect our environment more effectively. It also provides methods for environmental protection department to assess the impact that highway construction brings to water environment.
