The method of covalent bonding of heparin onto the surface of medical Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) material was studied in this thesis by a two?step procedure. Firstly, glycidyl rnethacrylate(GMA) was photoĉ˘˜rafted onto the surface of PVC without degassing. An activated surface with active epoxy groups was formed. The grafted polymer can also act as the spacer between heparin and PVC; Secondly, heparin is attached to the grafted surface through its functional groups reacted with the epoxy groups. The effects of different reaction conditions were investigated and the order of the factors was observed with orthogonal experiment method. Analysis of Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and Electron Spectrascopy for Chemical Analysis(ESCA) proved that GMA and heparin had been grafted onto the surface of PVC in sequence. The whole blood clotting time (WBCT) of optimized samples reached more than one week in SAT. Further animal tests indicated that the antithrombogenicity and the heparinĉ˘”uration of the samples had been greatly improved.
