Although the technique of quantitative metallographic analysisappeared 20 years ago, it has been broadly used in many fields suchas material researching and manufacturing. However, there aresome shortcomings in this technique, for instance, this techniquedemands highly skilled analyst, the analytical results are easy tobe influenced by the man-made factors, difficult to performquantitative analysis, low analytical accuracy and speed, poorbasic analytical theories .In view of this situation, this paperintroduces the theories and methods of computer image analysisinto the technique of quantitative metallographic analysis for thefirst time .On the base of arithmetic research, improve and designof metallographic parameters, at last, some real metallographic areprocessed.The emphasis of this paper is placed on the research of the basictheories and methods to use the technique of computer imageanalysis in the quantitative metallographic analysis. Using VisualC++ language programming technique, A large amount ofexperimental analysis system constituted by a digital camera, acomputer, a printer, etc.The major research works accomplished in this paper are asfollows:.Establishing the main structure of the metallography analysissystem..Using Sobel method to detect the edge of a image; Usingregion-growing to segment a image; Using Open and Closeoperation to edit a image;Extracting metal parameters on the base of area method.
