At present, research of SAP mostly focused on the synthesis and application of new product. Research of the relationship between structure and capability was not enough, especially the structural design and capability research of SAP on molecular level was seldom reported. Therefore, in this paper ,PAA / MMT was designed according to theory of intercalation and was synthesized by technology of intercalation which MMT dispersed in polymer in single nano-slice level. The structure was characterized by IR^ XRIX TEM. The relationship between structure and capability was studied.In this paper, PAA / MMT was synthesized by Inverse suspension polymerize, using partly neutralized acrylic acid as guest, MMT as host. Characterizing the structure by H^ XRD> TEM, it indicated MMT was fully extended which equably dispersed in polymer, obtaining the result of intercalary polymerization.After treating of organic modification by two-step intercalation method, the effect of one-step intercalation method and two-step intercalation method was compared by means of XRD> IR and TEM. The result showed that the interlayer distance of MMT by two-step intercalation method has come to 3.07nm. The interlayer distance of MMT which interlayed with PAA after two-step intercalation method has come to over 4.66nm. It indicated the two-step intercalation method was an effective method of organic modification of MMT.The best synthesis condition was educed by orthogonal experiment on the base of single factor experiment: the dosage of crosslinker is 0.1%, the dosage of MMT is 10%, the degree of neutralization is 70%, temperature is 70"C, the dosage of dispersion agents 4%, the dosage of initiator 2% (the percent mention above is relative to the mass of AA). PAA / MMT was synthesized under this condition has best absorbance that the water absorbency is 780g/g and the saline water absorbency is 86g/g. The products after absorbed has a best intensity and it's elastic modulus is 49MPa.The water absorbency and mechanism capability of SAP has been increased through polymerized with 10% MMT. This is because that the slice of MMT was fully extendedinand was dispersed to polymer, which has been compound on molecular level and colligated the capability of organism and inorganic material. So, there are very strong binding strength in this structure, which dew to increase products' mechanism capability. Although composite structure of polymer/inorganic nanometer is not novel in other polymer fields, composite structure of polymer/inorganic nanometer that was introduced to modify SAP by designing and synthesizing the structure of SAP is still belong to primary step in China. In this paper, the intercalating structure of PAA/MMT is studied, and the study enriches the research methods of high performance absorption materials and also develops the new thought ways to design the performance and structure of SAP.
